Attention Deficit Disorder cover

Finally… after 6 months of gestation inside my brain and another 2 months spent actually putting it together, my new mix is ready. Following on from the mix I put together last year before leaving the UK, this mix covers a lot of different styles and spans 2h25 - because I am actually unable to limit myself to making mixes that are within the usual 70/80 minutes limit. So I’ve decided to keep on making mixes which are a lot longer than usual, mainly because I find it to be a lot more fun than trying to limit myself (not that that’s a bad thing either).

As opposed to the last mix this one was done entirely in Ableton - because I have no decks here. Whereas last time I opted for a mix of both vinyl and digital, and used Ableton to wrap the whole thing together, this time the whole mix is digital (though quite a few tracks were ripped from vinyl on my trusty portable turntable) and done in Ableton. Which has proved more than a challenge at times but has been really enjoyable - on the plus side Ableton allows you to really delve deep into mixing, tweaking and effecting as much or little as you want, yet at the same time this means that you can find yourself getting really anal about things, whereas with a decks mix there is going to be some element of human error, or a human feel to it. I’ve tried to keep some of that in there though, but I’ve also gone deep into the anal side of things, at times managing to mix up to five tracks together and play a lot with eqs, effects etc… Something I couldn’t do live, not only due to skills but also due to not having the equipment. While the majority of files are digital I’ve stuck to using only hi res files, 320 mp3s, wavs and flacs, so the sound quality is still good. This ain’t no iPod mix

It’s felt weird doing an entirely digital mix, but now that it’s over it feels good. It’s a nice challenge, and while not something that really competes with a live mix, it’s a nice way of doing it differently. I’ve never really done multitracked mixes before either, until the one I put together last year, and that’s a really fun element of using Ableton to mix. One thing is for sure though, being able to include an element of live mixing is really what I like - at times it just doesn’t feel quite right to be doing everything on the computer. Limitations can be good for a challenge, but next time I want to go back to using a bit of both.

Inspiration from this mix came from a bunch of places, but mainly from a series of mixes I’ve been listening to regularly for the last 8 months or so. These are the Blogariddim mix series, Grievious Angel’s Dubstep Sufferah series, Mr Trick’s Dang in Dub mixes and DJ Pain’s film based series. While taking inspiration from all these, I’ve tried to still keep my own mix original and different to them, but they have all influenced me on some level or other. I can’t recommend all of these enough if you like serious mixes.

As for the mix itself, as I said it follows on from last year’s ‘Packing Shit Up’ mix (which is still available here). Various styles mashed over 2h25, covering electronica, hip hop, dub, dubstep, grime and some other things thrown in for good measure. There’s a few exclusives in there as well, from Kode 9, Lone Wolf, Vex’d, 2tall, Various Productions, Forensics and ENA - big ups to them all for the hook ups. In addition I’ve also added a lot of vocal samples from various sources: a Noam Chomsky lecture from 96, Bill Hicks and Richard Pryor live, Greg Palast, Madlib interview and Sun Ra interview. This time I also wanted to get cuts on there, which I didn’t do last time, so I ropped in some help from 2tall and DJ And who came correct with some amazing cuts. Different styles, be sure to check them when you get a minute, as well as all the artists featured on there. If you like what you hear I recommend them all.

The track list is available with the cover to download (see links below) and I’ve also cut and pasted it below for those who can’t be bothered to read a jpg (which is fair enough).

As for the download it’s available in two formats: the mix in its entirety (pretty big file, 330mb) or split into two parts, all of which are 320kbps. Make sure you turn up the bass and bump loud!

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together. Considering the last one still gets regular downloads I assume people are liking the format of a longer mix - but I’d like to know what you think so drop me a word or two if you want.

    Jobs a goodun.
Do you have them as ‘right click, download’-able files?
Cant be done with this streaming lark. Besides, i wanna put em on my mp3 player.

Ill have a listen when i manage to get me paws on the files.

  2. laurent Says:

Mate the direct download links are on there :???: the stream flash player thing is just an automatic thing that pops up when i add downloadable files to a post, so people can stream before downloading if they want. Download links are just before the tracklisting, 3 to choose from!

Cool mix, though the Grime and hip-hop sections aint really my bag. Awesome dubstep sections though. Wish i had those tunes at my disposal!

The tune at the end of the 1st mix is ace - is it the Mala one?
The tunes between 17 - 35 mins in the 2nd mix are effin class - real dark and nasty!

30 mins into mix 2 - what is that track?? Is it Swamp by Goth-T? Ive heard that on a few mixes. Ace tune - love those glitchy snares and wobbly bass.

Minor favour - can you give me the time index for the Vexd tune ‘bar kimura’? Its off the remix album of Plaid’s excellent Tekkon Kinkreet soundtrack. Just brought 2 art books from that film and theyre fecking beautiful. Well reccomended.

Overall, a very well put together mix. Some of it is not my bag, but i suppose my musical tastes are a bit different, or perhaps not as eclectic as yours.
You should burn one of your mixes on a CD and sell it in niche record shops or something - ive heard net mix sets recently that shat on most ones ive paid 12 quid for on CD. Internet FTW!

Keep up thee goodness. Watch those records dont start melting into pools of plastic, now…

  4. laurent Says:

yeah the tune that ends pt1 is Mala’s Changes. At 30mins into mix 2 it’s
Goth Trad - Swamp - Skud
    + Various Productions - Fortune - Various
    They’re mixed together.
Vex’d remix of Bar Kimura starst at about 20.30mins in, it’s mixed with a couple of tracks too but it plays on its own for a minute or so, it’s an amazing remix. and yeah it’s off the Tekkon Kinkreet soundtrack remix thing, it’s not out yet though afaik.

Glad you enjoyed it mate, feel free to pass the link around to anyone you think might like it too.
I’m doing some CDs to pass around at shows but cant be bothered to try and sell it tbh, that’s not why I’m doing these mixes!

Sorry for the randomness, but…. BOLLOCKS!

I found out that Goth-Trad is playing at DMZ on the 8th Sept in London. Thats great, but my brother is emigrating to Austrailia on that day, and me and the family are all going to the airport to see him off - its a night flight. Plus, my mate that i usually go clubbing with is away on holiday, so im gonna miss out double!

    DAMMIT!

Hopefully, next time i go to Tokyo, ill try and plan it to coincide with a BTC or 2.

Speaking of which - have a goodun at BTC. See if you can nab a mix set or 2

This mix is ultra dope - thanks a million, it’s been helping me pumping in the headphones all day.

Glad you like it Paul!

just managed to find the dl link for the attention deficit mix, have been bumpin the packing sh!t up mix for too long now, and still not sounding tired. Just wanted to give some props on the last one, and im about 30 mins deep into the latest mix, and its seeming to follow on in the same footsteps of dope!
And personally i like the longer format of the mix, why should you limit yourself to a length dictated by a certain media format? The interest doesnt die off due to the length, so its chance to get more scope from a mix
All in all good work man! And thanks for the free dl!

  10. Laurent Says:

    Hey Matt,

Glad you enjoy it too! Yeah I like the idea of longer mixes a lot, especially after doing this second one. The problem though is that the longer the mix the more time consuming it is, hence why i did a quick simple one recently, to break away from getting too stuck in. Especially using ABleton it gets a bit anal after a while. I’m already thinking about a new one, tho it’s gonna be a few months away for sure!

  11. Quentin Says:

    Hello Laurent,

amazing mix! I was really impressed as much by the diversity as by the intensity.
I got to your page after googling Bar Kimura, remix by Vex’d and I am happy I found you! Unfortunately I still don’t know where I can find the remix version of Bar Kimura.. I know of the whole remix album of Tekkonkinkreet, but I don’t know how to get even that, unless taking a trip to Tokyo…
Anyway, I am also glad you enjoy long mixes. After 70min or so one always stays a bit hungry for more beats and bass, but this was a full meal!

Please keep me updated about your next mix!

    Thaks for the treat.

  12. Laurent Says:

    Hey Quentin,

Glad you enjoyed the mix too.
As for the Vex’d remix I’m not even sure myself, as I got it from Vex’d themselves earlier on this year, which as far as I knew was ahead of the release. They said Sony or a similar big label were releasing it, so I assumed it would be a part of the official release. It might be for a side project though or a remix only thing, I know some anime have been getting special releases with bonus remixes from the soundtrack etc… so that could be one of those too.
I’ll ask the guys and see if I can find out for you.

    Lo

  13. Quentin Says:

    Hi Lo (!)

Cheers for the quick reply! I look forward to more news concerning Bar Kimura and to more mixes from your side. I did a bit of advertising for this page this weekend!
