December randomness – updates, observation and linkage

Damn it’s cold. In between preparing various end of year round up posts, mp3 lists and mixes (as well as working and doing other important things like that) here is a list of random observations, links and updates.

Random update – I updated the about page, am thinking of updating the picture gallery (it seems the Javascript galleries I was using aren’t working anymore for some weird reason) and am in the process of updating both sides for the radio shows I present. Rhythm Incursions is done (let us know what you think and be sure to check the latest shows), and Turntable Radio is next. Oh and Spin Science is also going to be redone and ‘updated’ (no new content though, I have no time), most likely to fall inline with the other two sites, there’s also a good chance I wil just merge Turntable Radio and Spin Science together. If anyone actually wants to contribute then please get in touch, so far that has yielded little to no results but who knows.

Random observation – Say what you want about social networking sites, but Twitter keeps on surprising me. I’m still partially struggling to ‘understand’ it but it is becoming clearer every week I think. Like most other internet related activity I guess the key is good sense and an undestanding of what you’re dealing with. In the case of Twitter I was attracted by curiosity but also by the social potential it has with regards to a project I’m working on. In the process I’ve realised it can be a great source of information, a place to discover people and things and also a source of inspiration. In related observations I’m really impressed/intrigued by how some bigger names are using it, namely Stephen Fry who from where I’m standing seems to have totally got it right, it’s not only interesting to witness but to also take part. Hats off to him and the people who are helping mastermind the whole thing. I haven’t found that many big names whose Tweets come across as natural and ‘real’ as Fry’s do. There’s a lot more to Twitter than meets the eye but there’s also a lot of obvious pitfalls, so be careful but if you’re intrigued I would definitely recommend joining the herd.

Random linkage - I came across this on Twitter last night. It’s called Favtape and it seems to be very similar to the defunct Muxtape, but this time you don’t upload the tracks yourself. Instead you have access to what looks like an insanely deep database of music hosted on the net with full on associated linkage to youtube, amazon and more. It’s easy to use, fairly intuitive and most importantly it’s fun because it relies on the golden concept of making ‘mixtapes’ and sharing them. And that concept hasn’t been as much fun since the days of cassette tapes (mp3 mixes are cool but if you made real tapes for friends you’ll understand). I missed Muxtape and it died while I was travelling so I’m hoping this lasts and doesn’t receive a death hit from music industry knee jerk reactions. Let’s face it, it’s not an impossibility, especially if you consider the recent spate of takedown notices for blogger accounts. Actually that could make a good theme for a favtape tape, how the music industry is killing itself by refusing to move on (needs a catchier tape title though). Anyways get on favtape, make tapes and spread them around, it’s December too so it’s not like most people aren’t already wasting time in the office. The potential for livening up the xmas afternoons is also enticing. Oh and here’s my profile on there, couple of test tapes on there.

Randomness over. Now someone please tell me how to keep my feet from freezing.
