We’re possibly more ‘connected’ than at any other time in history, spending most of our days in various modes of communication facilitated by technology and yet it’s never been easier to get the wrong end of the stick.
As has been rightfully noted in various parts of the internet recently, the whole social web thing is not really anything new: forums, chat rooms, newsgroups and others already allowed us to be social online years before it became trendy. And they also already allowed us to totally misunderstand each other. Cue endless bullshit debates on forums and people slandering you because of something you’d said on a forum somewhere being taken out of context (yes it happened to me once, in case that last line didn’t make it obvious).
As a misunderstanding brought about by a tweet on twitter today (bit of a mouthful that) has reminded me, the shortcomings of text-based communication are quite large and it’s very easy to forget them as you get involved in the buzz and vibrancy of being ‘always connected’, always speaking to someone, somewhere and at anytime.
What I write isn’t necessarily the exact reflection of what I think, say or do. My body cannot express itself through the pixels on the screen and, unfortunately, emotions rarely come through appropriately, no matter the emoticons used.
The title of this post refers to Jamie Lidell’s ‘Little Bit of Feel Good’ song, which for some reason was stuck in my head while writing this. Can’t find a link to it online, but you can download Mochipet’s excellent remix of it here. Ramblings on music and life will continue shortly.
