Decided to make my one-off round up of music I've come across online and in real life a regular thing. Open your ears.
Just stumbled across the above video on twitter about 5 minutes ago. Felt like a perfect way to start this post. Out to those who remember/know the original. Quarta 330 / JahtariAbove is the latest single from Japanese 'chiptune' artist and 8-bit producer extraordinaire Quarta 330. Available now on the Hyperdub '5' compilation and forthcoming on the 3rd 12" vinyl release of the same compilation. Not much more to say apart that it's exactly how 8-bit electronic music should sound. If you missed his first single on the same label I also recommend you check that. All available from www.boomkat.com. http://jahtari.org/music.htm While we're on the subject of 8-bit dub, I noticed the other day that the excellent Jahtari label, based in Germany, had added a fair few releases to their free net 7"s and EPs. Check above link where you can download entire back catalogue (something like 15+ 7"s and 6 or so EPs) as well as purchase their vinyl and CD releases. These guys have a great approach to making music but also releasing it. I've also just remembered that I was introduced to them by Kode 9 a couple years back, which makes the whole circle complete etc… Matt Shadetek + DJ/Rupture / Diamond District
http://www.rhythm-incursions.com/category/downloads/ Added a couple of free downloads to the Rhythm Inc site this week. First is a track from Matt Shadetek and DJ/Rupture, taken from their forthcoming mix CD 'Solar Life Raft' which is out on Agriculture records next month. Gritty, urban bass music meets world flavours. It's dope and recommended. After that I also added a track from the soon to be officially re-released Diamond District album, which is by far my hip hop album of the year hands down. Video above is a mini documentary on the group and album. Devonwho – 3p
I mentioned Devonwho in the first post in this series, and well he dropped a free 3-track EP this week, and it's again worth of your time. So preview above and download if you like it. Dam Funk – Hood Pass Intact
http://www.xlr8r.com/mp3/2009/10/hood-pass-intact Free track from the forthcoming debut album 'Toeachizown' which drops this month on Stones Throw. This track is one of the standout cuts – pure funk vibes, rolling. Great album too, if a little on the long side – I wasn't particularly up on the whole boogie-funk thing until I came across Dam Funk, but he has a way with synths and basslines that makes his modern-funk takes seriously addictive. Pure vibes. XLII – Deserted
I met XLII back in Japan through a friend. Turns out we had previous aquaintances in common and since then we've kept in touch. He's a rather talented producer and MC, with what one of my producer friends in Tokyo termed 'golden ears'. He's releasing a new album (preceded by an EP) which is now available in the UK (http://www.juno.co.uk/products/Ego-Friendly-EP/365287-01/). The above video is for one of the album's tracks and has apparently been getting a fair bit of play on MTV Japan – understandably as it's pretty dope, especially compared to the standard of MTV Japan videos. We finish with a slight plug. About two months ago I was put in touch with Shlomo, beatboxer extraordinaire and current artist in residency at the South Bank in London, to produce his podcasts. The first one is now available here – http://shlo.co.uk/podcast. Look out for more, they should be dropping roughly every 6 to 8 weeks. Nice to be doing something new and different to my usual podcasting output. Till next time – enjoy the music and support the artists.
